ABOUT THE NZ EQUINE HEALTH ASSOCIATION

Dr Ivan Bridge – NZEHA Chair

NZEHA was formed in 1998 in response to changes in animal and biosecurity law laid out in the NZ Biosecurity Act 1993.  The organisation represents all equine organisations in matters relating to equine health, equine welfare and equine disease incursion.  This is particularly important when consulting with Government as it presents a unified, informed representation of the equine industry’s views.  Membership of NZEHA is open to all nationally recognised equine organisations.  It is administered by a Committee which comprises  members from the following organisations:  NZTR, Equestrian Sports NZ, NZ Pony Clubs, NZRoyal Agricultural Society and via them Equine Breed Societies, NZ Racing Board (now RITA), NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, Harness Racing NZ, NZ Standardbred Breeders’ Association, NZERF/Equine Trust,  New Zealand Equine Veterinary Association. One member represents the equine service organisations, such as transport, farriery and sales and the NZRB (now RITA) veterinary advisor also joins the committee.

Having a number of experienced equine veterinarians on the Committee provides the organisation with access to solid technical resources to pursue its objectives.  In addition to consulting with Government it also provides a forum for all equine activities to discuss issues relating to equine health and welfare and to develop strategies to provide leadership in these areas.

The objects of the Association are:

a) To consult with Government agencies on behalf of all equine stakeholder organisations in New Zealand on all issues relating to New Zealand equine health, welfare and disease incursion;

b) To ensure the interests and views of all stakeholders on all issues relating to New Zealand equine health, welfare and disease incursion are considered;

c) To develop anticipatory plans on all issues relating to New Zealand equine health, welfare and disease incursion;

d) To report to all stakeholders all relevant and appropriate information relating to the business of the Association, including strategies on all issues relating to New Zealand equine health, welfare and disease incursion;

e) To determine training plans and to provide and promote advice on training and response planning for all stakeholders on all issues relating to New Zealand equine health, welfare and disease incursion.
